  1. This community studies class is the best class ever ! I have been able to learn many things about my community and school . For example Pershing and Cannon street were given in honor of World War I.This community Studies class differs from many other classes in Handley. Because we are provided hands on experiences on the things we learn during class.

  2. This class is very interesting because we get to learn and sometimes relive history. I have learned about Captain Handley and what he has done with Roanoke and Handley High School and also I learned why Wedowee doesn't have a railroad going through it. This class is more exciting because you don't know what we are going to do next and it is really fun.

  3. This class is so interesting because you we get to learn about Roanoke and other parts of the past. Somethings I have learned is about Roanoke and what it was like in the past to the present. Another thing I have learned about is about the Creek Indians and what they brought to battle and what their culture was like. This class isn’t like any other class. For example, Math, you can’t go outside and have class, or can you go to the learning center. This class is exciting because you never know what you are going to do next.

  4. I think that this class is interesting because you get to learn so much about where you live and how people before you lived in the same community. I have learned more about Roanoke in this class than I ever have before. I learned about all of the WWI veterans from Randolph County and how they were brave enough to sign up for such a dangerous war. In this class, you actually get to work in groups and discuss your ideas with your group, but in Math, for example, you do most of your work by yourself and can't discuss with a neighbor. This class is exciting because you never know what you will learn about you fantastic community next!

  5. The community studies class is an interesting class where we learn about history in our own county. Although our county is little, it's amazing to see that we were apart of some historical events, and the places in our county are historical. For instance, I learned that the monument downtown Wedowee, Al was a monument to honor the soldiers in WWI; What kind of diseases they had in WWI, and how many white and black soldiers we had in the war. This class is interesting unlike other classes, because in other classes we are to sit in complete silence and can't collaborate with each other. Being in community studies is an exciting opportunity because you learn so many things that happened in our little county that our generation doesn't know about. You learn that in the past it was a whole lot different than our generation is today. Also in this class you are able to go out and learn in a fantastic way but in other classes we read a book, while we sit in a classroom. It's amazing to see what comes next in this class and the many things about Randolph county just makes it an interesting, fun class to be in.

  6. So far Community Studies is one of my favorite classes I have taken this trimester. I am very into hands on learning and learning about things other than textbook material. I have also never known much about our county, town, and community, but this class is giving me a chance to become more familiar with what is, and what has been in our community that makes it unique and special. So far I have learned about the Creek Indians of Randolph County and their way of life, and downtown Roanoke from years ago and how it impacted how our town is now. I believe this class would be considered much more interesting than most traditional classes because many people are much more concerned with local activities other than things that may never even impact them. I would say that being a part of the Community Studies class gives students an opportunity to learn things and apply them to their lives unlike a traditional classroom.

  7. This Community Studies class has been the most fun class I have had at Handley High School! I believe that this class will be a memorable one because I haven’t really known that much history about our county. I think this class is a great class and I can’t wait for the upcoming events we have planned. So far in this class I have learned a lot about the Creek Indians and their unique way of life. Creek Indians played all sorts of games, had rituals, and some interesting artifacts. Community Studies has been a greater class than some of the classes I’ve taken over the years. I really like this class because we get to hang out with the Randolph County Learning Center on Fridays. Even though we have only seen them three Fridays, they have made a major impact on my life.

  8. This class has been nothing short of my expectations. So far, it has been an exciting experience learning the history of our community. This class combines fun and learning which is what all students enjoy. This is how this class differs from the majority of classes here at Handley High School. I am looking forward to more things to experience together with my peers and Community Studies instructors.

  9. While taking community studies class, I have learned so much about the county we live in. It has been an exciting adventure so far being in this class and studying WWI for me. I have learned while studying WWI that some streets have been named for some of the men, like General Pershing. For all the times I have been to Wedowee, Alabama I have never really noticed the monument until we learned about it. When we went to the Leaders office to look at old newspapers, I found out our county was really involved in WWI and they had tons of celebrations honoring the soldiers. Also, being able to join the RCLC on Fridays have been a great experience. Community Studies class is the best class I have been in all of my years of school.

  10. Community studies have been by far one of the best classes I have had here at Handley High School. I love how we get learn about the history around Roanoke and how Roanoke even came about! During these few days I have had in this class I learned about the creek Indianans and their way of living. I also learned that Roanoke was inhabited by natives of the Muscogee Indianans which is also known as the creek Indianans. The Indians played games to bring in rain, cure illness, and to remove evil spirits. Games also played a very big role for the children. Compared to the rest of the traditional classes here at Handley this class is the most interesting class.

  11. I have definitely enjoyed my time in Community Studies and am looking forward to the next few weeks! I feel that this class offers many opportunities, especially around our community. I have learned so much about Downtown Roanoke, and I know that there is more that we haven't even began to talk about. Through our studies, I have developed a new outlook on and appreciation for our town. I love having the chance to interact with people outside of our school, such as Mr. Wyner and the Randolph County Learning Center. There are not many classes that offer this type of opportunity. This class is definitely unlike any others, and I think that it's good for students to have a break from the traditional classes on their schedule. Overall, I am looking forward to an excellent learning experience through this course.

  12. Community studies is by far one of my favorite classes. I enjoy the opportunities to be a part of our town and interact with the people in it. I’ve obtained and will continue to obtain a greater appreciation for our community. Being a part of the Captain Handley group, I’ve benefited from talking to Mrs. Rhonda Baldwin and Dr. Paul McMurray, a descendant of W.A. Handley. These people, along with the research we have done, helped develop the tour and other projects on Captain Handley. I really delight in getting a different experience in this class versus other classes. I enjoy doing things outside of the classroom, like visiting the learning center. Or things not so outside of the classroom but rather outside of traditional subjects. I look forward to the next few weeks of this class and the events that will take place.

  13. Community Studies is the best history class I’ve had at Handley. It isn’t like traditional history classes because we are learning more about our community and it’s a lot more fun. I like learning about the history of Roanoke and the people in it. So far I’ve learned about Captain Handley, his contributions, and many other things he has done here. We don’t just sit in the classroom all period and I like that. I also enjoy the activities we do with the learning center. I’m looking forward to whatever new things we do next.

  15. I like this class because I get to do things I never get to do in my other classes. I love going to the learning center on Fridays,I love meeting new people and having fun. I also have found out new things about my town, I didn't even know that we had a basement under the old post office. The most interesting thing that I have learned is the Ella smith doll I didn't know that she lived in Roanoke and I didn't know that she created the dolls. I like my community class better because we actually learn things about our town because some of these things I did not know about Roanoke. I am ready for our tour because I get to share some of the new information to other people.

  16. Community Studies has become my favorite class of all time! Just in these past few weeks I have learned so much about our county that I never knew. I can't wait for all the upcoming events and more learning. The past few weeks in this class I have learned about the Creek Indians way of life and all the interesting things about them. Not only did the Creek Indians play games for fun they also played games to settle arguments among other tribes. I also enjoy this class because every Friday we get to participate in activities with the Randolph County Learning Center. Just in the few weeks we have been visiting the Learning Center all the men and women have made a major impact on my life.

  17. Community Studies has taught me so much about the history of the town and county I live in such little time. I've lived in Randolph County for ten years and didn't know half the things I've learned these past few weeks. We have so many opportunities that you wouldn't have in just a normal history class. During these first few weeks I've learned about some of the World War 1 heroes from Randolph County and how we got some of the street names we have in Roanoke. We also work with the Randolph County Learning Center on Friday's. The men and women at the RCLC will brighten your day because they are so sweet and kind hearted. I am looking forward to the rest of the trimester and all the opportunities we have left to pursue.

  18. This community studies class is the best class ever. I have learned a lot of interesting things about my community in this class. I enjoy this class a lot because studying the history of our community is amazing. I have learned about soldiers from Randolph county that fought in world war 1. There is no other class in HHS like this one. Community studies is the best class ever.

  20. Community Studies has given me a chance to learn about the town that I live in. I did not know much about W.A Handley but now, I know how important and successful he was to Roanoke and to Alabama. This class differs from other classes because it's more of a hands-on kind of thing. It's more interesting when you're learning and you really want to know more, almost like reading an exciting book. Other classes are boring and go by a routine. I love community studies.

  21. Even though Community Studies has been a lot of work so far, I think it's an overall very rewarding experience and good learning environment. I've learned a lot about the Creek Indians in our area and their way of life. It's been very interesting and I'm very excited to go on the dig soon. And although I do enjoy learning about our town and our history, I also really enjoy going to the learning center every Friday. Visiting them brightens my day and the class certainly gives a different experience than a normal classroom. The learning environment is more open and gives us more control, and I think that's a good thing because we're becoming older and more responsible. Normal classes can be boring, but this is interesting and different every day. I think Community Studies is very interesting.

  22. This class is definitely way different than my traditional classes. I feel more interested in this class since we are actually studying history in our very own county. In the past few weeks, I've earned a lot about the history of our school and town. I've also learned the initial reason why there is tension between Wedowee and Roanoke. I love having the opportunity to be involved with the learning center. It feels great to see them having a good time with us. I look forward to this class everyday and I am very excited to see what Community Studies has in store for us. There are great opportunities ahead of us.

  23. Community Studies is definitely one of my favorite classes, even though I've only been taking it for three weeks. In that short time, I've learned many things about the history of the county I live in, for example, some facts I did not know about the history of downtown Roanoke. I have also been able to learn about and meet many important people in Randolph County. This class allows me to learn through interaction and exploration rather than just sitting in a classroom and reading a textbook. Community Studies also differs from the traditional class because we are allowed to give back to the community while we learn. My favorite part of this class is being able to participate in activities at the Randolph County Learning Center. All in all, this class makes learning fun and is never boring.

  24. This elective history course of the studies of our community proves noteworthy; as it has four different projects being worked on and presented as well as weekly visits with the Learning Center, so far. I think this course has been beneficial as well as a pleasure, and I anticipate a good future in this class. I think it is efficient in the way we are beginning- the four different major topics of our county’s history given to each group and initially researched and illustrated by them and then explored by all of us. I think this will allow us to not waste time and dig deeper into the subject- literally. I enjoy being able to collaborate and share with classmates as well as important individuals from our community. I’m one working on a website, and I think it is a creative way to display our findings. This is important because it is in the wishes of Ms. Baldwin, other history enthusiasts, and natives of Roanoke/Randolph for us to keep the history of Randolph County alive and remembered for futures to see. I have learned just how much Captain Handley believed in the future of Roanoke, and how his dreams came true. He gave the land for our school, helped begin the mill that the town really financially depended on, served in Congress and the Civil War, and helped bring the railroad through that connected Roanoke to Birmingham and the rest of the world. This class cannot compare to traditional classes as it has engaging projects in store to explore the history of our community. Thus far, history classes have had to focus on America, and even the world. I am thankful and excited for this opportunity and hope to have the best time in the rest of this trimester.

  25. Community Studies is by far my most enjoyable class. I have learned so much about how our small town came to be. I learned about how Captain Handley brought industrialization to Roanoke. He opened a cotton mill and railroads to our town. This class differs from others because it is more interaction and less paper and pencil. I enjoy this class because I am a more hands on type of person. I would have to say my favorite part of this class is spending my fridays with the Randolph County Learning Center. Community Studies is far from a boring class, it is something to look forward to everyday.

  26. For Jordan Trammell:
Community studies are the best class I have been a part of. Most of my class, as you would think, is boring and long. You may want to go to sleep. In community studies, sleep is never one of the options. I would have never thought that Roanoke had so much history until I came into community studies class. I learned a lot in this class. I learned that the trail of tears actually came through Randolph County. Also I learned about the creek Indians. I learned about the different games they played, what they ate, and what they did for fun. When being in community studies class, you know that every day you will learn something new. This community studies is very much different from any other class I have taken at Handley. I know this because when we learn this material we would actually apply it by going to museums and walks.
